Observations from Our First Year.

We have been RVing for one year now! Time really flies, and so do the miles! We now have over eleven thousand miles on our rig, and it has been great for the most part. It’s a great way to travel and we love the state parks, and many of the private campgrounds we have stayed in. The people are totally awesome and extremely helpful. It’s all great, except when it’s not.

Now I’m not complaining here, I just wanted to talk about some of the unexpected things that, as newbies, we have discovered in our travels. This is a short list, there are many things that I didn’t expect, but these are the top four.

The Campgrounds.

We enjoy going to state parks, and private campgrounds, but I don’t know who is designing them. I have found that most of the roads into and within RV camping areas are barely wider than the RV! Why are these roads so narrow? I would think that they would want to make it easier for a large vehicle to get in and out. Am I wrong for expecting that? I have had some white-knuckle experiences driving through some of these campgrounds! Please if you are reading this, widen your roads!

Gas Stations.

Why are there no gasoline pumps at the truck lanes? I know that some truck stops used to have gas pumps, but most of those are closed now and only offer diesel. I don’t like trying to squeeze in with the cars, but I have no choice since I have a gasoline RV. What makes it worse is that my fuel cap in on the rear of my RV.

Navigation Apps.

There are so many navigation apps, and some are of course, better than others. We have used a couple at the same time just to compare routes. This is sometimes difficult when they suggest different ways of getting to our destination. After much research, it looks like getting an actual navigation device seems to be the best way to go if I want to actually avoid being stuck where a large vehicle doesn’t belong. Now where to mount it?

Other Drivers.

This is one I’m sure all of you who drive large vehicles can relate to. The other drivers on the road seem to have no idea how to act around something that takes around 300ft to stop. I can’t tell you how many small vehicles simply dart in front of me just to hit their brakes as soon as they do! I don’t mind the open highway so much, but once we get near a city, it gets crazy.

In Summary.

These are some of the things I didn’t know about when we started this adventure, but none of these things will stop us from enjoying the journey! We are loving the RV life so far and plan to visit even more locations this year!
